One Second Sculpture

A pie hits a face. The form happens at that instant. It emerges through impact-pressure, contact, collapse-and disappears just as quickly. There is no stable object to hold onto, only a brief configuration of matter in motion. Six people are caught off guard. At the exact moment of contact, I take a Polaroid. The photograph does not record the event after the fact; it fixes a form that has already begun to dissolve. What it holds is neither before nor after, but a fraction that slips in between.

I think of this work in relation to sculpture, but without permanence. The form exists only as it passes, and continues through its traces-moving from action to image, from impact to surface. "One second" marks a threshold.
