Doppelganger originates from a century-old prophecy of twins passed down through the artist’s family. Connecting family members across Kinmen, Taiwan, and Indonesia, the work traces three generations of migration and a family history that stretches across the sea.
Combining family memories, historical events, and fictional narratives, the film reconstructs these stories through staged sets and reenactments. Actors from three generations each perform dual roles, allowing the legend of the twins, migration, and family memory to overlap and mirror one another.
In its final chapter, the film returns to the family’s abandoned ancestral house in Kinmen. Drawing inspiration from traditional Kinmen marionette theatre, the work incorporates the roles of puppeteer and storyteller to recount the history of a migrant family before their ancestral spirits. Through the legend of the twins, the work interweaves family memory, migration, and historical events, revealing the shared trajectories shaped by modern Asian history.
