Transoceanic Practice

Anchor, neon light, archival inkjet print, 2021

Transoceanic Practice originates from the artist’s family history of migration from Kinmen to Southeast Asia. Following the route once taken by her elders from Kinmen to Indonesia, Lin Yi-Chi traveled between Kinmen and Bangka Island, retracing a journey across the sea.

Centered around an anchor, the installation reflects the condition of migrants suspended between drifting and settlement. The neon text Forever, Is(not), Eternal evokes the complex emotions of migrant descendants toward homeland, language, and cultural memory.

The work combines contemporary images of Houpu Harbor in Kinmen and Pangkal Balam Port in Indonesia with poems written in Hokkien, Chinese, Indonesian, and English, presenting a migration history that stretches across the sea.
